Lake Erie, Ohio
October 7, 2010 – 1:28 amAs Smallmouth Bass go, this fishery is the fastest growing for size and numbers anywhere in North or South America. This 870 mile shoreline provides the greatest habitat and forage base that a smallmouth angler could hope to find. The current state record is 9 lbs. with many 6 to 7 lb. fish caught every year.
From early April, Smallmouth begin their journey towards the shallows as water temperature reaches the 42 to 44 degree range.
Through the better part of June, large numbers of smallies will continue to hit jigs, tubes and crank baits. As mid to late summer approaches, the schools begin to scatter off deeper structures and vertical jig fishing generally is the best presentation. By late September and all through October, these voracious fish move ever so closer to rocky structure and shelves and can be taken on live bait or Carolina Rigs.
Recommended fishing rods are those in the spinning combination which will accommodate 6# line and with a light action. Generally, 6′ rods and spinning reels rated from 4 to 8# line is preferred. Tube jigs or Fuzzy Grubs are a great presentation tipped with Shiners in the spring and 1/4 to 1/2 ounce Carolina Rigs are the ticket in the fall.
